Research Interests

My research aims to uncover the relative role of early experience versus innate mechanisms in species recognition among related songbird species. I will investigate this question by testing for species recognition prior to song learning (in week-old nestlings) as well as prior to any social experience (in embryos. By comparing results from populations that breed sympatrically with a congener and those that do not, I will also assess whether the potential for hybridization affects these processes (i.e. by selecting for greater species discrimination ability).
