Graduate students Brandi Pessman and Crystal Uminski earned Graduate Research Fellowship Program awards from the National Science Foundation.

Pessman and Uminski are in the Ecology, Evolution and Behavior specialization of the School of Biological Sciences. Pessman is studying multimodal communication in spiders in biologist Eileen Hebets' lab. Uminski studies discipline-based education research with a focus on biology assessment design and implementation, working with biologist Brian Couch's research group.

The program provides three years of support to graduate students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines or education and have demonstrated the potential for significant research achievements.
