Energy Sciences Research Summer Internship - DUE January 20, 2016

The Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research (NCESR) with support from Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) offers the Darrell J. Nelson Summer Undergraduate Internship in Energy Sciences Research so that you can pursue your interest in energy issues and energy science research.


  • Pursuing any major at UNL
  • Be in good academic standing
  • Be a sophomore or junior
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Requires Faculty sponsor letter

Research Experience for Undergraduate in Bioenergy Systems - DUE February 1, 2017

The School of Biological Sciences administers the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Bioenergy Systems each summer. Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), you have the opportunitiy to work with a faculty mentor research a wide spectrum of bioenergy research topics such as the study of non-food crops for biomass production, metabolic engineering of oilseed biosynthesis, green algae as liquid biofuel production systems, microbial carbon sequestration, biochemical pathways of lignocellulose conversion, and system engineering of microorganisms for biomass conversion.


  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Current undergraduate with at least one semester of coursework remaining before obtaining a bachelor's degree

Preference will be given to students based on these criteria:

  • Completion of advanced coursework related to the research area
  • Junior or senior standing with one year of remaining undergraduate coursework
  • Evidence of interest in pursuing an advanced degree (master's or Ph.D.)

Applications are especially encouraged from students in these groups:

  • Historically underrepresented in graduate education, including students with disabilities
  • Currently attending academic institutions where research programs are limited

Summer Research Programs offer you who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents the opportunity to participate in nationally funded research groups across multiple disciplines. Designed for students with an interest in pursuing graduate education, the program provides a first hand glimpse into life as a graduate student and prepares undergraduates to take that next step. Students are selected to work closely with a specific faculty mentor and their team of researchers throughout the summer on either an ongoing research project or a project condensed to fit the 8 to 10 week timeframe.

The Nebraska Center for Virology (NCV) administers the Undergraduate Summer Research Experience in Virology (USREV) each summer. NCV invites applications from students across the U.S. to work with faculty research exploring virology.
